Separated by Adoption, This Shelter Dog’s Sadness Broke Hearts Online

Last month, rescuers from Stillwater Animal Welfare (SAW) picked up two dogs wandering together through the busy streets of Oklahoma City.

While it’s not unusual for SAW officers to rescue multiple dogs at once, most stray dogs eventually learn to adapt and become more independent. But from the moment they met this pair, the team could tell there was something special about their bond.

“They must’ve traveled a long way,” said Ashlie Jerkes, one of the SAW officers, in an interview with The Dodo. “But no matter what, they stuck together.”

The rescuers welcomed the duo with open arms and gave them the fitting names Bonnie and Clyde. Even at the shelter, they refused to be separated.

“They spent their stray hold in the same kennel, and they seemed very close,” Jerkes shared.

For three days, Bonnie and Clyde stayed snuggled up together as they rested and received medical care. Despite both battling heartworm, they slowly regained their strength and were cleared for adoption.

When they were briefly separated on the adoption floor, it was obvious how deeply they missed each other. “When we let them outside, they would run together every time,” Jerkes said.

Before long, Clyde was adopted by a loving family—leaving Bonnie behind. Alone in the shelter, the sweet girl clearly missed her best friend and began to lose hope.

One day, a welfare officer snapped a heartbreaking photo of Bonnie lying face-down on her cot and posted it on the shelter’s social media, hoping someone would give her the loving home she needed.

“Bonnie is all alone now that her brother has been adopted,” the post read. “She really misses having someone to cuddle with.”

Thankfully, Bonnie’s wish came true sooner than expected.

“The post went up on Friday, and by Monday morning, someone came in to adopt her,” Jerkes said.

Bonnie was finally going home—and she was overjoyed.

“She’s already settling in!” her new mom, Brayden Routh, commented on Facebook. “She’s going to live her best life with her new big sister, a blue heeler mix, and go on all sorts of adventures.”

Though Bonnie was only adopted a few days ago, it already feels like she’s been part of the family forever. While she’ll never forget her bond with Clyde, Bonnie is now embracing her new life with excitement and joy.
